The Carnival Girl

Some people talk about running away to join the carnival — but Phyllis Horne really did it! At 14, she was stuck in a home where abuse & alcoholism were the norm, so she headed out to find something better. Living under a bridge, Horne was taken in by carnie's — Carnival Workers — who showed her the ways of the carnie's gypsy life.

Soon Horne was traveling from city to city, relishing in her new career — and gathering stories as she went. But working for the carnival wasn't all fun & games. Horne endured brushes with the law, broken relationships and family trials. But she rose above those challenges to eventually own her own business and earn a comfortable retirement in Idaho.

A master storyteller, Horne will charm you with her absorbing tales of the carnie lifestyle and her rise to success. You will be inspired to realize anyone — even a young runaway to the carnival — can experience The American Dream.

What is Love? pt.5

Loving as God commands us to love is a serious matter.  This pure love is what makes us a true believer of God, one who is doing the things God has given for us to do.  We can see that if we do not love, we remain in death.  If we hate, dislike, loath, detest or disfavor a person, then we do not love with Gods pure love.  Yes, we are to HATE the SIN, not the sinner.  We must show our love as Christ loves us and the rest of mankind.  We can love when our inner most being is filled with a desire from God to serve and please God.  If we are to please Him and show Him our love for Him, then we will do all He has given and commanded us to do.

What is Love? pt.4

"And He has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother." 1 JOHN 4:21

Who is our brother?  Our brother in different places in Scripture refers to other believers who are following Christ, as we should be, and it also refers to our brothers as any member of the human race.  So, if we claim to love God, we will love His pure love to ALL our brothers.  This pure love is the same love that Jesus lived as our example.  Many say it is impossible to love like this.  Remember, NOTHING is impossible for him who believes.  If you are struggling, ask God, He will give you everything you need to fulfill His command to love as he told us to.  It will not be easy and at times may feel impossible, but remember that God would not have commanded us to do so if He knew we could never succeed as He commanded.

"We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love our brothers.  Anyone who does not love remains in death." 1 JOHN 3:14

"If anyone says 'I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar.  For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen." 1 JOHN 4:20

What is Love? pt.3

So, what is love?  This pure love, which so many Christians do not fully understand or have a complete grasp of.  We must turn to Scripture, God's Word, and see how love is defined.  What I find we should look at is the example of Jesus’ life, the love He showed to everyone He came into contact with throughout His entire ministry here on earth, and then we also turn to the following breakdown of love from the Bible:

"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.  It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.  Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away." 1 CORINTHIANS 13:4-8

We can see from this passage of Scripture that we find no mention of a love that is of the emotional type.  Emotions come and go, depending on how we may feel at any particular time.  This pure love that we are commanded by God to have is an action that we MUST do.  So let me ask you this:  Where are you going to get your definition of love from, Gods Word? Or this world?  Who do you serve this day?

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God.  Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.  Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." 1 JOHN 4:7-8

What is Love? pt.2

It is our love for God that is to be placed first and foremost in our priorities in our walk with God.  The second priority before anything else is to love our neighbors as we love ourselves.  OK, well who are our neighbors?  Let’s look at the parable of the Good Samaritan, you can find it in "LUKE 10:29-37".  What it basically says here, is that our neighbor is anyone we come into contact with.  So now we may say, "No Problem," but remember that the pure love must be from our hearts, we must not hold back from God or others this great love we are to give.  This pure love we are commanded to give is unconditional love that is a love that has no conditions on it.  It is a love that never stops or decreases, or even wavers.  We are told to love our brothers, and we are told what many will find the hardest love of all, that is to love our enemies.  Wow!  This pure love that we are commanded to give is not as easy as we may at first perceived once we are fulfilling the command to love.

"But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.” MATTHEW 5:44-45

What is Love? pt.1

What we need to first look at is how love is defined by society, or what I call the world.  The world defines love as a passion or lust, when they see an extremely appealing person that they desire; they say "I love".  Then they also have a love when they admire the other person and enjoy their company, they are quite fond of the other.  Then the world has what they call "true love", this is when they have the first two types of love, the desires and emotions and feel that they will never again desire or even wish that they will want to be with anyone else again.  However, as can be seen from the high number of divorces that this "true love" as with other types of love, they are not a true and lasting love.  These types of love are an emotional love, they are not the pure love that we are commanded to have by God's Word.  The closest the world can come to the pure love that the Bible tells us to have is the love most mothers have for their child.  As close as this type of love comes, it is still emotional love and light years away from being the "true love" we are commanded to have by Gods Word.

As we look to Gods Word, we see that the love we are to have is not something He recommends or suggests for us to have or give.  The love He has for us to give is a love we have been commanded to do.  If we are commanded, then we can see that this pure love we are to love with and show must be an action that we MUST do.  It is something we can learn to do.  It is a change in our life, in our way of thinking, one that will affect our total being, our fundamental nature of our entire life, how we act, speak, and respond to situations around us.  God has given us a COMMAND, an instruction that MUST be obeyed, a mandate.  If the love God COMMANDED us to have was an emotional love as the world really sees the definition, then we would never be able to do as commanded, as we would not be able to love at all times as instructed, but only as we felt like.

Without pure love, love as defined by God's Word, we can have no relationship with God.  Without His pure love in its fullest meaning, we are going to find ourselves lost in this world of sin.

"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.  The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no commandment greater than these." MARK 12:30-31

Faith!?!

"'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes." Mark 9:23

We CANNOT be a true Christian without faith.  That faith we start our walk with should be constantly growing, like exercising your muscles.   We need time in God’s Word every day, and we need to stay in prayer if we plan to grow into the men and women that God truly desires for us.

If I say I have faith but do not put that faith into action, what good will it do?  How can I say to a man trapped in a pit, “be well”, “be free”, and not put into action the throwing of a rope or placing a ladder or reaching of my hand to actually help the man out.  If all is right with God, and we are doing His Will, we can believe, and have faith that God will heal someone’s sickness; the action here would be the belief.  Sometimes we need to remember that God’s Will is for a doctor to treat sickness.  PRAYER and knowing God’s Will is very important.  Many a person serving God has a testimony that they have sat down at a table to eat with no food, they pray as if they have the food and within a few minuets someone knocks on their door with a blessing of food.  Both people put their faith into action.

"Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” Hebrews 11:1

“For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved.” Romans 10:10
